Voter Registration Deadline is March 13 for 2006 Primary Run-off Election
Nearly 1.9 Million Registered to Vote in Harris County

HOUSTON – March 10, 2006 – Harris County Voter Registrar Paul Bettencourt reminds county residents that March 13, 2006, is the deadline to register to vote in the April 2006 run-off election. Texas law requires voters to be registered 30 days prior to the election in which they wish to vote.

“Those who did not vote in the March primary are still eligible to vote in the upcoming primary run-off, but only if they are registered by Monday” said Bettencourt. “I encourage Harris County residents to register by Monday, March 13, and to take advantage of early voting.”

Registered voters are allowed to vote at any of 31 polling locations during early voting periods. On Election Day, however, voters must vote at assigned locations.

Applicants may register to vote if they are:
  • a resident of Harris County, and
  • at least 17 years, 10 months of age (to vote, you must be 18), and
  • a U.S. citizen, and
  • not declared mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court of law, and not finally convicted of a felony — or have satisfied the court’s requirements after a felony conviction or have received a pardon.

Applications must be postmarked or delivered in person to any Tax Office location by March 13, 2006. The Tax Office’s 15 branches are open from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The office also offers Harris County registered voters the opportunity to update their voter information online at www.hcvoter.net.

Applications and information on the status of registered voters are available on the Voter Registrar’s Web site: www.hcvoter.net. For more information, please call 713-368-VOTE (8683).
